What would happen if you went in the ditch with your big adventure bike? How would you push your bike up a 45-degree slippery gravel slope yourself?
We know mistakes can happen, and while you could save yourself and your bike only sustained minor damage, going off the track or getting stuck in a mud pit could prove extremely challenging and tiring to get out from there.
That's why we always carry an emergency tow/winch rope. Whether riding alone or in a group, this simple and affordable kit could save the day. It's very lightweight and compact, so there's no reason not to take it. Make it a staple on your bike or in your pack.
The kit uses a tough but lightweight 50ft synthetic winch rope and two soft shackles. The rope has one loop end, while the other is a free lead. We like to use this kit as a winch with your rear wheel. Wrap the free lead around an anchor and close the loop end with a soft shackle. Then, lace the free lead around the rear hub to use as a winch.
More about this technique? Check Chris Birch's excellent video on the topic.
Note: The soft shackles allow an easy way to secure the cord on the bike or an anchor without using knots that could be impossible to undo after use.
Whether you need to pull a bike out with your crew, self-rescue with the winch technique, tow a dead bike to civilization, or lift one from the ground for maintenance, carrying a rope with you is always a good idea!
