If you ride a Kawasaki KLR650 you are most likely aware of this flaw and you can find countless discussions online about this.
The "doohickey" is the KLR650 community's term for the "Balancer Chain Adjuster Lever".
From the factory, the design is not the greatest and this part can fail,
The factory balancer system adjustment lever almost never works properly, and sometimes fractures. Sometimes the tensioning spring breaks or is really limp.
Hence why many KLR riders replace it preemptively. Most people also report reduced vibration and noise from the engine after doing the upgrade.
If you decide to do the upgrade, examine the parts as you remove them from the engine, to be sure you understand what you are doing, as well as how the parts work together.
This kit is composed of:
- Reinforced steel balancer lever
- Choice of Torsion spring and x2 Extension springs
- Optional washer
- Drill Bit
Notes:
You'll need to search for information online about the installation of this kit, as well as a shop manual and some special tools to remove the rotor.
- The 6mm washer included here should be installed against the balancer if you do not already have one (year depending).
- Three springs are included: Two tension springs to keep the same design as stock and a torsion spring which is far superior.
- If going with a tension spring, choose the one that will hook with 1/4" to 3/8" extension. This is subjective as there are no established specifications.
- If the hooks are hard to install, turn the spring over, it doesn't matter which side is up or down.
- The included drill bit is when going with the torsion spring, drill at the 5 o'clock location.
